Winter 2009 – 2010 Weather Forecast
By: John Redd, 11/4/2009

If you think that the economy is lousy, wait till you read this…

Bunk theories

  • Acorns and Apples reflect the past, not what’s to come.
  • Caterpillars are totally random
  • Remember Bruce McCloy?  We could use some of his optimism now!

NOAA Climate Prediction Center

  • El Nino is developing, max this winter
    • Warm Pacific water
  • Wet in CA, FL and TX
    • Storms that we do get will have plenty of moisture
  • Dry in the Mississippi Valley
    • Blocking high pressure
  • NE shows average temp and precip.
    • i.e. could go either way, probably both
    • lots of  extremes, including ice

Farmers’ Almanac

  • Colder than normal, primarily due to persistent cold temperatures in January, with only brief thaws. Other cold periods will occur in mid-December and mid-February.
  • Precipitation and snowfall will be below normal. Watch for a snowstorm around Thanksgiving, with other snowy periods in mid- and late December and mid- and late January

Polar Ice Cap Theory (They’re melting!)   www.OnTheSnow.com

  • No significant snow or cold till Jan. due to exposed water preventing atmospheric cooling

www.LongRangeWeather.com

  • Wetter than normal through much of the fall season.
  • Drier and windy weather is likely in early 2010.
  • Snowfall will be near to below normal levels.
  • Icy weather is also possible due to the moderate El Nino.

Final Answer…in sum…

  • Like the economy, nobody really knows, but it sure makes for good conversation!

First snow of the season

First snow of the season

How exciting.

Yesterday the lifts starting running for the first time at Mount Snow. We were the first ski resort to open in Vermont.

Today its snowing. Our first day time snow of the season. I love it! It’s so pretty. So far it is not accumulating but we’ll see what happens later! Will keep you posted!

Its time to starting thinking about that trip up to Mount Snow. Rent a trailside condo for the weekend or the entire season!
