John’s Winter Weather Forcast!

November 17th, 2011

Winter 2011 – 2012 Weather                                       By: John Redd, Realtor, 11/9/2011

First, let’s look at last winter’s results…

Predicted: SNOWY… Check!

My training was actually in Forest Management at UVM, but like many people, weather is my obsession.

Even though I’m not a climatologist, my theory of cycles seems to hold up.

  • An active tropical storm season often gives us more snow storms.  However, it’s important to note that the Gulf of Mexico has been relatively quiet, resulting in warmer waters, which may enhance the moisture content of Nor’easters.
  • La Nina, albeit less strong than last year, continues (cold surface temps in the eastern tropical Pacific).
  • The North Atlantic Oscillation is currently negative, which is good for snow.
  • The Arctic Oscillation is also negative, which locks in cold air across the northern tier.
  • Solar storm cycle, per NASA ‘Low solar activity has a profound effect on Earth’s atmosphere, allowing it to cool and contract.’
  • Volcanic activity from several years ago will enhance our chances for snow storms.
  • New to me this year is the LRC, Lezak’s Recurring Cycle. The LRC states that between October 1st and November 10th each year, storms that occur in this time frame have potential to re-occur in the next 40-50 days after the original storm happens.  We’ll see what happens in mid December!

NOAA Climate Prediction Center

  • NE shows a better chance of below normal temp’s and above normal precipitation.
  • Reading the details, their greatest confidence is in lots of snow for the mid-west.

LongRangeWeather.com has been the one of the most accurate for the last several winters.   For this winter they are predicting 1 to 2 feet more snow than average.

Accuweather.com has better graphics, although more conservative.   Nonetheless; snowfall is still forecast to be slightly above normal.  Most of that snow is predicted to fall from December into January.  The interior Northeast is predicted to be colder and snowier than areas closer to the coast. An early, heavy lake-effect snow season can be significant this year.

TheWeatherCentre.com is out of Plymouth State, and while it’s a new source of inspiration, it is well respected among its peers.  They are showing heavier snow to our north and west, but it still confirms that our snowfall will be above normal.

Consensus rules the forecast!

Once again, it will be a snowy winter at Mount Snow this season.
